Hauling fuel or chemicals means you need both the hazmat and tanker endorsements — and together they show as the X endorsement on your license. This bundle covers all of it: the federally required Hazmat ELDT plus 142 practice questions for both knowledge tests. $45, saving $5. There is no ELDT requirement for tanker — only hazmat.

What You Get

📘
Hazmat ELDT — the required course

The federally mandated theory training for the H endorsement. Under 2 hours, submitted to the FMCSA registry within 24 hours. Your state won't let you test without it. $20 on its own.

🧪
Hazmat Test Prep — 100 questions

Including a full 30-question exam simulation at the exact length of the real test, plus deep drills on placarding thresholds and the segregation table — where most drivers fail. $15 on its own.

🛢
Tanker Test Prep — 42 questions

Liquid surge, baffled and smooth-bore tanks, outage, and the rollover risk that makes tank work dangerous. No ELDT needed for tanker — just pass the test. $15 on its own.

💰
142 questions, $5 less

Bought separately these run $50. Bundled they're $45 — and it's everything you need for both endorsements in one purchase.

What a Hazmat and Tanker Endorsement Actually Costs

Most people asking this get a vague answer. Here are real numbers — your state fees vary, but the training side is fixed:

What you pay for Typical cost Required?
Hazmat ELDT theory training $20 — included here Yes, federally required
Study material for both tests $30 — included here No, but it's why people pass
TSA Security Threat Assessment ~$87 (varies by state) Yes, hazmat only
State knowledge test & endorsement fees Varies — often $10–$50 Yes
Tanker ELDT $0 — doesn't exist No ELDT required for tanker

TSA and state fees are paid to those agencies, not to us. Confirm current amounts with your state licensing agency and TSA.

The part that saves people money: there is no ELDT requirement for the tanker endorsement. The federal rule covers Class A, Class B, the B-to-A upgrade, and the Hazmat, Passenger and School Bus endorsements only. Tanker and Doubles/Triples are knowledge-test-only. If a provider is trying to sell you tanker ELDT, you don't need it. Full ELDT requirements →

How to Get Your Hazmat and Tanker Endorsement

Two endorsements, two very different timelines. Getting the order right is what separates six weeks from four months.

1
Complete Hazmat ELDT — included in this bundle. Under 2 hours, submitted to the FMCSA registry within 24 hours.
2
Book TSA fingerprinting the same day. This is the bottleneck — 4 to 8 weeks on its own. Everything else can happen while it runs.
3
Study both tests using the 142 questions included here
4
Take the tanker test whenever you're ready. Nothing to wait for — no ELDT, no background check.
5
Take the hazmat test once your ELDT shows in the registry. 30 questions, 80% to pass.
6
TSA clears you, both endorsements are added — and together they show as the X endorsement. Full timeline →
Total time: 6 to 10 weeks, almost entirely because of the TSA background check. Start that on day one and the rest fits inside it. Start it last and you add two months for no reason. How the TSA check works →
Don't have your CDL yet?
Fuel Hauler CDL A — $50

This bundle assumes you already hold a CDL. If you're starting from scratch, Fuel Hauler CDL A adds the Class A theory course to hazmat ELDT and tanker practice questions — the whole path in one purchase.

The Two Tests You'll Take

Test Questions To pass Prerequisites
Tanker (N) endorsement 20 80% — 16 correct None — no ELDT, no background check
Hazmat (H) endorsement 30 80% — 24 correct ELDT + TSA background check

Question counts follow the federal model. Confirm the specifics with your state licensing agency. What's on the hazmat test →

You get 142 practice questions against 50 real ones — nearly three times the coverage, with an explanation on every answer and your score broken down by topic so you know exactly what to review.

Can You Get These Endorsements With a Record?

This comes up constantly and rarely gets a straight answer, so here it is.

Tanker has no background check at all. No TSA screening, no disqualifying offense list. If you hold a CDL and pass the knowledge test, you get the endorsement.

Hazmat is different. The TSA Security Threat Assessment screens for specific disqualifying offenses — certain felonies within the last seven years, some permanently disqualifying. Many convictions are not on that list, and the assessment includes a waiver and appeal process for some that are.

If you're unsure, the honest advice is to start with tanker. It costs you nothing to find out, there's no screening, and it's a real endorsement that opens real work. Then apply for the TSA assessment separately and find out where you stand before spending money on the hazmat side. Check the current disqualifying offense list with TSA directly — not with a training provider, and not with a forum. Full breakdown →

Why 142 Questions Beats a Free Practice Test

💡
An explanation on every question

Right or wrong, you find out why immediately. Wrong answers are built from the mistakes drivers actually make — placarding thresholds, the segregation table codes, surge in a partial load.

🎯
Scored by topic, retake what you missed

After each attempt you see exactly where you're weak, then drill only those questions. Unlimited attempts, any device, access never expires.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a hazmat and tanker endorsement cost?+
The training side is $45 with this bundle — hazmat ELDT plus study material for both tests. On top of that you'll pay TSA roughly $87 for the background check and your state's knowledge test and endorsement fees, often $10 to $50. There is no tanker ELDT to buy, because none is required.
How do I get a hazmat and tanker endorsement?+
Complete hazmat ELDT, start TSA fingerprinting immediately, pass both knowledge tests, and the endorsements are added once TSA clears you. Tanker requires no training course and no background check — you can test for it right away. Hazmat takes 6 to 10 weeks, almost all of it the TSA check.
What is the X endorsement on a CDL?+
X is what appears on your license when you hold both Tanker (N) and Hazmat (H). It's not a separate test — you earn it by passing both. Fuel and chemical haulers need it, and it's one of the better-paying endorsement combinations in trucking.
Do I need ELDT for the tanker endorsement?+
No. The federal ELDT rule covers Class A, Class B, the B-to-A upgrade, and the Hazmat, Passenger and School Bus endorsements only. Tanker and Doubles/Triples are knowledge-test-only — no course, nothing reported to the FMCSA registry.
Can a felon get a tanker endorsement?+
Tanker has no background check at all, so a record is not a barrier — pass the knowledge test and it's yours. Hazmat is different: the TSA Security Threat Assessment screens for specific disqualifying offenses, though many convictions are not on that list and some allow a waiver or appeal. Check the current list with TSA directly before spending money on the hazmat side.
How long does it take to get both endorsements?+
Six to ten weeks in total, and the TSA background check is nearly all of it at 4 to 8 weeks. Tanker on its own can be done as fast as you can book a test. Start the hazmat side on day one and everything else fits inside that window.
Is the hazmat ELDT in this bundle FMCSA-registered?+
Yes. DLA Academy is listed on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry and your completion is submitted within 24 hours. Verify us at tpr.fmcsa.dot.gov, and check any provider the same way before you pay — if a provider isn't listed, your state won't accept the completion. Accepted in 49 states; Washington is not served.
When do I need a tanker endorsement?+
Generally when hauling liquid or gas in a tank with an individual container over 119 gallons, or 1,000 gallons or more in total — fuel trucks, water trucks, milk haulers, chemical tankers, vacuum trucks. Rules vary slightly by state.
What if I don't have my CDL yet?+
This bundle assumes you already hold a CDL. If you're starting from scratch and heading into fuel work, Fuel Hauler CDL A at $50 adds the Class A theory course to hazmat ELDT and tanker practice questions.
