119 Practice Questions All 3 DMV Tests Explanation on Every Answer Unlimited Retakes Only $15

Getting your Commercial Learner's Permit means passing three separate knowledge tests at the DMV — General Knowledge, Air Brakes, and Combination Vehicles. All three are usually taken the same day, and you need at least 80% on each to pass.

This practice test gives you 119 DMV-style questions covering every topic across all three exams, with an explanation after every answer. Questions shuffle on each attempt, retakes are unlimited, and it works on any device.

The Three CDL Permit Tests

Knowledge test Real test To pass Practice questions here
General Knowledge 50 questions 40 correct — 80% 50
Air Brakes 25 questions 20 correct — 80% 35
Combination Vehicles 20 questions 16 correct — 80% 34

Class A applicants take all three. Class B applicants take General Knowledge and Air Brakes only — the Combination section is included here for when you upgrade. Question counts follow the federal model; confirm with your state licensing agency.

119 questions against 95 on the real tests. More coverage than the exams themselves, so every topic comes up more than once and you find your weak spots before the DMV does.

What's Inside — 119 Practice Questions

📋
General Knowledge — 50 Questions

Vehicle inspection, cargo securement, safe driving, hazard recognition, skid recovery, alcohol rules, hours of service, and the following-distance and stopping-distance numbers people miss.

🛑
Air Brakes — 35 Questions

Brake components, governor cut-in and cut-out, the low-air warning at 60 psi, inspection procedure, ABS, brake fade, spring brakes, tank drains and brake lag. This is the section people fail most.

🚚
Combination Vehicles — 34 Questions

Fifth wheel coupling and the pull test, glad hands, air lines, rearward amplification, jackknife recovery, off-tracking, converter dollies, and doubles and triples procedures.

⚡
Explanation on Every Answer

Right or wrong, you find out why immediately. Wrong answers are built from the mistakes drivers actually make, so a miss teaches you something instead of just costing a point.

🔀
Questions Shuffle Every Attempt

Randomised on every attempt so you can't memorise the order — exactly like the real DMV test. Practise until you're scoring 90% or better consistently before test day.

📱
Any Device — No App Needed

Works on phone, tablet or computer. No download, no app store. Bookmark it and study on a break, during a commute, or anywhere with a connection.

This is practice — not ELDT. This course helps you pass the DMV knowledge tests required for your CLP. It does not fulfill the federal ELDT requirement and is not submitted to the FMCSA Training Provider Registry. You must complete CDL Theory ELDT separately before your state will let you take the skills test. Need it? CDL A Theory ELDT — $20 →  CDL B Theory ELDT — $20 →  or bundle all three for $45 →

Planning to Add Endorsements?

Your permit gets you the license class. Endorsements are separate — each has its own knowledge test, and some require their own ELDT for first-time applicants.

Worth knowing early: Tanker and Doubles/Triples require no ELDT at all. The federal rule covers Class A, Class B, the B-to-A upgrade, and the Hazmat, Passenger and School Bus endorsements only. For tanker you just pass the 20-question knowledge test — our Tanker Practice Test covers it for $15.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many questions are on the CDL permit test?
Three separate tests. General Knowledge is 50 questions — you need 40 correct. Air Brakes is 25 questions — you need 20. Combination Vehicles is 20 questions — you need 16. Each requires 80% to pass. Class A applicants take all three; Class B applicants take General Knowledge and Air Brakes only.
What's on the CDL permit test?
General Knowledge covers vehicle inspection, cargo securement, safe driving, hazard recognition, skid recovery, alcohol rules and hours of service. Air Brakes covers brake components, pressure levels, inspection procedure, ABS, brake fade and spring brakes. Combination Vehicles covers fifth wheel coupling, glad hands, air lines, rearward amplification, jackknife recovery and off-tracking. All three are covered here.
Does this replace CDL Theory ELDT?
No. CDL Theory ELDT is a separate federal requirement that must be completed before your state will let you take the skills test, and it is reported to the FMCSA registry. This practice test helps you pass the DMV knowledge tests for your permit and is not reported. If you need both, the CDL A & CDL B Complete Bundle is $45, saving $10.
Can I use this for a Class B permit?
Yes. Class B applicants take General Knowledge and Air Brakes, both fully covered here. The Combination Vehicles section applies when you upgrade to Class A, and it's included at no extra cost.
How many practice questions are included?
119 in total — 50 on General Knowledge, 35 on Air Brakes, and 34 on Combination Vehicles. That's more coverage than the 95 questions across the three real tests, so every topic comes up more than once.
How many times can I retake it?
Unlimited. Questions shuffle on every attempt so you can't memorise the order, the same way the real DMV test works. Practise until you're consistently above 90% before test day.
Does passing Air Brakes remove the restriction from my CLP?
Yes. Passing the Air Brakes knowledge test at the DMV removes the air brake restriction from your permit, meaning you can practise in vehicles with air brakes. This course covers every Air Brakes topic tested.
Is this submitted to the FMCSA TPR?
No. This is a practice course — it is not submitted to the FMCSA Training Provider Registry. Only your CDL Theory ELDT completion is submitted.
How long must I hold my CLP before the skills test?
Federal law requires at least 14 days. Some states apply longer waiting periods, so confirm with your state licensing agency. Find your state's requirements →
Can I buy this for multiple drivers?
