Can You Get a Hazmat Endorsement With a Record?
This is one of the most common questions we get, and it rarely gets a straight answer. Here is the honest version.
The Hazmat endorsement requires a TSA Security Threat Assessment, which screens against a specific list of disqualifying offenses. Some are permanently disqualifying. Others disqualify only if the conviction falls within the last seven years. Many convictions are not on that list at all, and TSA provides a waiver and appeal process for some that are.
Worth knowing: the Tanker (N) endorsement has no background check at all. No TSA screening, no disqualifying offense list. If you hold a CDL and pass the 20-question test, you get it. If you haul fuel or chemicals in a tank you need both Hazmat and Tanker โ and when you hold both, your license shows a combined X endorsement. They work very differently:
