Can I take Hazmat ELDT on my phone?+
Yes. The course works on any device — phone, tablet, laptop, or desktop. Most drivers complete it on their phone in under 2 hours, often during downtime between loads or on a break. The course remembers your progress so you can log in and out as needed.
What is the difference between the $20 and $35 options?+
Both include the same FMCSA-approved Hazmat ELDT course. The $20 standard option submits your results to the FMCSA TPR within 24 hours. The $35 same-day option submits results the same day you complete — ideal if you need to schedule your DMV test as quickly as possible.
Do I need a TSA background check for a Hazmat endorsement?+
Yes. In addition to ELDT theory, the Hazmat endorsement requires a TSA Security Threat Assessment — background check and fingerprinting. Start your TSA appointment the same day you finish ELDT. The background check takes 4–8 weeks and runs independently of your DMV knowledge test — starting immediately is the biggest time-saver in the entire process. Most states use TSA Enrollment by IDEMIA at IdentoGO centers. Florida uses driver license offices instead.

Is DLA Academy FMCSA-approved?+

What score do I need to pass the ELDT course?+
You need a minimum score of 80% on the final assessment to complete your ELDT requirement and have your results submitted to the FMCSA TPR.
How long is a Hazmat endorsement valid?+
Most states require Hazmat endorsement renewal every 5 years. Florida is an exception — Florida requires renewal every 4 years. You must complete a new TSA background check at each renewal. ELDT theory training is required only for first-time applicants, not renewals (assuming your endorsement has not lapsed).
TSA renewal details →
Do I need this course if I already have a Hazmat endorsement?+
No. If you held a valid Hazmat endorsement before February 7, 2022, you are exempt. This course is only required for drivers adding the Hazmat endorsement for the first time on or after that date. If your endorsement has lapsed for an extended period, you may need ELDT again — check with your state DMV.
What happens if I fail the Hazmat knowledge test?+
You can retake the test at your state DMV. Retake rules vary by state — some allow same-day retakes, others require a waiting period. Your ELDT certification stays valid — you do not need to retake the ELDT course. The Hazmat ELDT + DMV Test Prep bundle ($30) includes practice questions to help you pass the first time.
