Do You Need ELDT for a Hazmat Endorsement? Yes — Here’s When | DLA Academy

Do You Need ELDT for a Hazmat Endorsement?

Yes — if you’re getting the hazmat endorsement for the first time on or after February 7, 2022. The training has to be finished before your state knowledge test, and it has to come from a provider listed on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry, which reports your completion so your state can verify it. If you’re renewing an endorsement you already hold, you don’t.

The rule, stated precisely

ELDT is required before you take the hazmat knowledge test if you are obtaining the endorsement for the first time on or after February 7, 2022.

That’s the exact trigger. It’s tied to getting the endorsement for the first time on or after that date — not to your licence class, and not to how long you’ve been driving. Which is why the answer surprises people who’ve held a CDL for a decade.

Does it apply to you?

  • Adding hazmat for the first time, now. Yes — ELDT first, then the knowledge test. This is true no matter when you got your CDL.
  • You’ve held a Class A or B for years and are adding hazmat. Yes. The February 7, 2022 exemption covers licence classes you already hold, not new endorsements. A driver with a 2015 Class A adding hazmat in 2026 still needs hazmat ELDT. Full explanation →
  • Renewing a hazmat endorsement you already hold. No. ELDT is a one-time requirement for first-time applicants. Renewal means a new TSA background check and, in most states, retaking the knowledge test — but not the training again.
  • Moving states with an active endorsement. Usually not. Transferring an active endorsement generally doesn’t require new ELDT, and often not a new TSA assessment either, provided the new state issues it within five years of your last one. Confirm with your new state licensing agency.
  • Held the hazmat endorsement before February 7, 2022 and let it lapse. This one depends on how your state treats a lapsed endorsement — whether you count as a first-time applicant again. Don’t guess on this. Call your state licensing agency before paying for anything.
Where to settle an edge case: your state licensing agency, not a forum and not a training provider — including us. They verify your ELDT in the registry before scheduling your test, so they’re the ones whose answer actually governs.

What about tanker, doubles or triples?

No ELDT required — ever. The federal rule covers Class A, Class B, the Class B to A upgrade, and the Hazmat, Passenger and School Bus endorsements. That’s the whole list.

Tanker (N) and Doubles/Triples (T) are knowledge-test only. No course, nothing reported to the registry, no background check. If a provider quotes you a price for tanker ELDT, that tells you something about the provider. Full requirements breakdown →

Worth knowing if you’re going for the X endorsement (hazmat + tanker): you can take the tanker test straight away, while your hazmat TSA check is still processing. Tanker practice test — $15 · Hazmat & Tanker — $45

Where it fits — and what to start today

Three things have to happen, and two of them overlap:

  1. Complete hazmat ELDT. Under 2 hours, submitted to the registry within 24 hours. Must be done before your knowledge test.
  2. Start the TSA background check the same day. It takes 4–8 weeks and runs independently — ELDT doesn’t have to be finished before you apply to TSA, only before you test.
  3. Take the knowledge test while TSA processes. In most states you can sit it as soon as your ELDT shows in the registry.

A few states sequence this differently, and agent states such as Texas issue the fingerprinting code only after you apply in person. Full timeline →

Edge cases — lapsed endorsements, out-of-state transfers, and how your state classifies your situation — are decided by your state licensing agency, which verifies ELDT in the registry before scheduling your test. Confirm with them and with the FMCSA Training Provider Registry. Training only counts if your provider is listed when you train; training conducted after a provider’s removal date is considered invalid. DLA Academy course price: $20.
