The Alabama Hazmat Process — Step by Step

Alabama is a serious freight state. The Port of Mobile is one of the largest US Gulf ports, the Decatur and Mobile chemical corridors run constant hazmat loads, and manufacturers like Mercedes at Vance, Honda at Lincoln, Hyundai in Montgomery and Mazda Toyota in Huntsville drive heavy industrial traffic along I-20, I-65, I-10 and I-85. Hazmat-endorsed drivers stay in demand here year-round.

Here is the full process, in the order that gets you endorsed fastest.

1
Complete hazmat ELDT online — $20

DLA Academy's FMCSA-registered hazmat course, under 2 hours on any device. Your completion goes to the FMCSA Training Provider Registry within 24 hours — or within minutes of you confirming your details with the $15 Instant Submission add-on.

2
Pre-enrol for the TSA background check — same day

Pre-enrol at tsaenrollmentbyidemia.tsa.dhs.gov or call 1-855-347-8371. Required before fingerprinting. Do this the day you finish ELDT — it starts the longest clock in the process.

3
Attend fingerprinting

Bring your CDL, identity documents (passport, or licence plus birth certificate) and payment to a TSA Enrollment by IDEMIA centre. The appointment takes about 20 minutes.

4
Take the ALEA knowledge test — don't wait for TSA

Once your ELDT shows in the registry, book your test at an ALEA Driver License office handling CDL services. 30 questions, 24 correct to pass. The endorsement add-on fee is $31.25.

5
TSA processes your Security Threat Assessment

30 to 60 days. TSA notifies ALEA directly when you clear — there's nothing for you to chase.

6
ALEA issues your hazmat endorsement

Passed test plus TSA clearance, and the H endorsement is added to your Alabama CDL. Valid five years. Total: 6–10 weeks from ELDT to endorsement in hand.

Green steps overlap — the knowledge test doesn't wait on TSA.
The one move that saves weeks

Start TSA the same day you finish ELDT

The background check is the only real bottleneck at 30 to 60 days. Everything else fits inside it. Finish your ELDT, pre-enrol for TSA that same day, then book your ALEA test as soon as your completion shows in the registry — you don't need TSA clearance to sit it.

Start the TSA check last instead, and you've added two months to a process that didn't need them.

Finish ELDT → pre-enrol TSA same day → book fingerprinting → book ALEA test in parallel
Worth one phone call. Not every ALEA office handles CDL services, and sequencing can change. Confirm your nearest CDL-capable location and the current order at alea.gov before you travel. Full national timeline →

The test covers federal hazmat regulations, materials identification, placarding rules and thresholds, the Hazardous Materials Table, shipping papers, the segregation table, emergency procedures, and loading and unloading. All questions come from Section 9 of the Alabama Commercial Driver License Manual.

Test sites handling CDL services include Birmingham, Mobile, Huntsville, Montgomery and Tuscaloosa.

The most-missed question on this test is placarding. Table 1 materials need placards at any quantity; Table 2 materials only at 1,001 pounds or more gross weight. Drivers mix these up constantly. Our hazmat practice test drills it across 100 questions including a full 30-question exam simulation — or bundled with ELDT for $30, saving $5. See what's on the test →

Hauling Fuel or Chemicals in Alabama? You Need the X

If you're running the Mobile petrochemical corridor, Decatur chemical plants, or fuel routes out of Birmingham, hazmat alone isn't enough. Tank work needs the tanker (N) endorsement too — and holding both shows as the X endorsement.

Tanker requires no ELDT and no background check. The federal rule covers Class A, Class B, the B-to-A upgrade, and Hazmat, Passenger and School Bus only. Tanker is a 20-question knowledge test and nothing more — so you can go and get it while your hazmat TSA check is still processing. One endorsement in hand instead of none. Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need ELDT to get my hazmat endorsement in Alabama?+
Yes. Federal law requires all CDL drivers adding a hazmat endorsement for the first time to complete ELDT from an FMCSA-registered provider before the ALEA knowledge test — regardless of how long you've held your CDL.
How many questions are on the Alabama hazmat test?+
Thirty multiple choice questions. You need 24 correct — 80% — to pass. All questions come from Section 9 of the Alabama Commercial Driver License Manual.
How much does an Alabama hazmat endorsement cost?+

Can I take the ALEA test before TSA clears me?+
In Alabama the knowledge test and the TSA check run independently, so you don't have to wait for clearance to sit the test once your ELDT is in the registry. Confirm the current sequence with ALEA before booking — it takes one phone call.
What agency handles hazmat endorsements in Alabama?+
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) Driver License Division. Not every ALEA office offers CDL services — check alea.gov before travelling.
How long does it take?+
Six to ten weeks. ELDT is under 2 hours; the TSA check is 30 to 60 days and is the only real bottleneck. Start TSA the same day you finish ELDT. Full timeline →

At ALEA Driver License offices handling CDL services — Birmingham, Mobile, Huntsville, Montgomery and Tuscaloosa among them. Confirm your nearest CDL-capable location at alea.gov.

Do I need tanker with my hazmat?+

Does ALEA accept DLA Academy ELDT?+
Yes. DLA Academy is listed on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry and ALEA verifies completion directly through it. Verify us at tpr.fmcsa.dot.gov.
How long is the endorsement valid?+
Five years. Renewal requires a new TSA background check but not a new ELDT course. Start 60 to 90 days before expiry — TSA takes the same 30 to 60 days at renewal.
