The Ohio Hazmat Process — Step by Step
Ohio CDL licensing runs through the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Freight moves constantly along I-70, I-71, I-75 and I-80, and the Cleveland, Toledo and Cincinnati corridors keep hazmat-endorsed drivers in demand.
Here's the full process, in the order that gets you endorsed fastest.
1
Complete hazmat ELDT online — $20
DLA Academy's FMCSA-registered hazmat course, under 2 hours on any device. Submitted to the FMCSA registry within 24 hours — or the same business day with the $15 same-day upgrade. Ohio BMV verifies your status directly through the registry.
2
Book IdentoGO fingerprinting — same day
Book your TSA hazmat background check through IdentoGO the day you finish ELDT. It runs 30–60 days and is the longest clock in the process — starting it late is what turns six weeks into four months.
3
Visit an Ohio BMV deputy registrar office
Bring your CDL, DOT medical card, proof of identity and proof of Ohio residency. Complete your endorsement application and pay the state fees. BMV checks your ELDT through the registry before testing.
4
Pass the Ohio hazmat knowledge test — don't wait for TSA
30 questions, 24 correct to pass. Covers federal hazmat regulations, placarding, shipping papers and emergency response. You don't need TSA clearance to sit it.
5
Ohio BMV issues your hazmat endorsement
Passed test plus TSA clearance, and the H endorsement goes on your Ohio CDL. Total: 6–10 weeks from ELDT to endorsement in hand.
Green steps overlap — the knowledge test doesn't wait on TSA.
Ohio tests locally, not centrally. There is no single CDL testing centre — you test at your local deputy registrar office. Not every office handles CDL services, so confirm at bmv.ohio.gov before you drive there.
The one move that saves weeks
Book fingerprinting the same day you finish ELDT
The TSA background check runs completely independently of your BMV test, and it's the only slow part at 30–60 days. Book IdentoGO the moment you finish ELDT, then take your BMV test while TSA processes.
Do it the other way round — test first, fingerprints later — and you've added two months for nothing.
Finish ELDT → book IdentoGO → visit your deputy registrar → TSA clears in 30–60 days

The test covers federal hazmat regulations, materials identification, placarding rules and thresholds, the Hazardous Materials Table, shipping papers, the segregation table, and emergency response.
Must be 21+ to transport hazardous materials in interstate commerce, which covers virtually all hazmat work. Federal requirement, not an Ohio rule.

Hauling Fuel or Chemicals in Ohio? You Need the X
If you're running fuel around Cleveland or Toledo, chemicals along the Ohio River corridor, or tank work through the Columbus distribution hub, hazmat alone isn't enough. Tank vehicles need the tanker (N) endorsement too — and holding both shows as the X endorsement.
Tanker requires no ELDT and no background check. The federal rule covers Class A, Class B, the B-to-A upgrade, and Hazmat, Passenger and School Bus only. Tanker is a 20-question knowledge test and nothing more — so you can go and get it
while your hazmat TSA check is still processing. One endorsement in hand instead of none.

What Ohio Hazmat ELDT Covers
- Federal Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR)
- Hazmat classification and identification
- Placarding thresholds, marking and labelling
- Loading, unloading and cargo segregation
- Shipping papers and documentation
- Emergency response procedures and the ERG
- Security requirements for hazmat drivers
- Hours of service for hazmat loads
- Every topic required by Appendix A to Part 380
Already hold an Ohio CDL? You still need hazmat ELDT if you're adding the endorsement for the first time — regardless of when you got your licence or how long you've driven commercially. The February 7, 2022 exemption applies to licence classes, not endorsements.

Getting Your Class A Too?
First-time Class A applicants adding hazmat need both courses. Fuel Hauler CDL A covers Class A ELDT, hazmat ELDT and tanker practice questions in one purchase.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need ELDT to get my hazmat endorsement in Ohio?+
Yes. Federal law requires all CDL drivers adding a hazmat endorsement for the first time to complete ELDT from an FMCSA-registered provider before the Ohio BMV knowledge test — regardless of how long you've held your CDL.
How many questions are on the Ohio hazmat test?+
Thirty questions. You need 24 correct — 80% — to pass. Administered at your local Ohio BMV deputy registrar office.
Where do I take the hazmat test in Ohio?+
At an Ohio BMV deputy registrar office. Ohio doesn't use centralised CDL testing centres, so you test locally. Not every office handles CDL services — confirm at bmv.ohio.gov before travelling.
How much does an Ohio hazmat endorsement cost?+
$20 for DLA Academy ELDT and $85.25 for the TSA Security Threat Assessment. Ohio BMV knowledge test and endorsement fees are set by the state and vary — confirm at bmv.ohio.gov. A valid TWIC card may reduce the TSA fee to roughly $41.
Can I take the BMV test before TSA clears me?+
Yes. The knowledge test and the TSA check run independently once your ELDT is in the registry. Running them in parallel is what keeps this near six weeks instead of four months.
How long does it take?+
Six to ten weeks. ELDT is under 2 hours; the TSA check is 30 to 60 days. Book fingerprinting the same day you finish ELDT.
Full timeline →
Do I need tanker with my hazmat?+
If you haul hazmat in a tank vehicle, yes — and together they show as the X endorsement. Tanker requires no ELDT, so you can take that test while your hazmat TSA check runs.
Hazmat & Tanker Complete — $45 →
Is DLA Academy accepted by Ohio BMV?+
Yes. DLA Academy is listed on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry, which Ohio BMV uses to verify ELDT completion. Accepted at all deputy registrar offices statewide. Verify us at
tpr.fmcsa.dot.gov.
What's the minimum age?+
21 to transport hazardous materials in interstate commerce, which covers virtually all hazmat work. Federal requirement, not an Ohio rule.
How long is it valid?+
Five years in most cases. Renewal needs a new TSA check but not a new ELDT course. Start 60 to 90 days early — TSA takes the same 30 to 60 days at renewal.
