Short answer: 6 to 10 weeks — and almost all of that is the TSA background check, not training. Your hazmat ELDT takes under 2 hours. The move that saves you weeks is not waiting. Book TSA fingerprinting the day you finish ELDT, and take your knowledge test as soon as your completion shows in the registry — in most states you don't have to wait for TSA clearance to sit the test.
Adding a hazmat (H) endorsement is one of the better moves a driver can make. Hazmat-endorsed drivers earn more per load and get access to freight most drivers can't legally touch.
But the process trips people up, because it involves three separate agencies that don't talk to each other on your schedule. Go in the wrong order and you add two months for no reason.
The Full Timeline
Here is the fastest legitimate sequence. The green steps run at the same time as the TSA wait — that's the whole trick.
1
Complete hazmat ELDT online
FMCSA-registered theory training. Self-paced, any device, no classroom.
Under 2 hours
2
Completion reaches the FMCSA registry
Submitted automatically. Same business day with the $15 same-day upgrade.
Within 24 hrs
3
Book TSA fingerprinting — same day
Pre-enrol online, pay the fee, book at an IdentoGO centre. This starts the clock. Do it today, not after your test.
Same day
4
Take the knowledge test — don't wait for TSA
30 questions, 80% to pass. In most states you can sit it as soon as your ELDT shows in the registry, while TSA is still processing.
1–2 weeks in
5
TSA processes your Security Threat Assessment
Criminal history, immigration status, FBI records. TSA notifies your state directly — you won't get a separate notice to act on.
30–60 days
6
Your state issues the endorsement
Passed test plus TSA clearance on file, and the H endorsement is added to your CDL.
1–2 weeks
Green steps run in parallel with the TSA wait — they don't add time.
This is where the weeks are won or lost. Steps 4 and 5 overlap. If you treat them as sequential — wait for TSA, then book a test, then wait for a slot — you turn a 6-week process into a 4-month one. Nothing about the knowledge test depends on TSA in most states.
Check your state's process →
One caveat worth reading. A handful of states sequence this differently, and a few issue a temporary licence marked “not valid for hazardous materials” until TSA clears. California is one. Confirm the order with your state licensing agency before you book anything — it takes one phone call and it's the difference between six weeks and sixteen.
How Long Does Hazmat ELDT Actually Take?
Federal law has required first-time hazmat applicants to complete ELDT from an FMCSA-registered provider since February 7, 2022. You can't sit the knowledge test without it.
With DLA Academy it's under 2 hours — fully online, self-paced, any device. Most drivers finish in one session. Your completion goes to the FMCSA Training Provider Registry within 24 hours, automatically. Nothing to submit yourself.

How Long Does the TSA Background Check Take?
This is where your waiting happens. The Security Threat Assessment covers fingerprinting, criminal history, immigration status and FBI records. Processing runs 30 to 60 days.
Pre-enrol online first
Complete pre-enrolment through TSA Universal Enrollment Services and pay the fee. The standard fee is $85.25, effective January 1, 2025. A valid TWIC card may qualify you for roughly $41.
Book fingerprinting
Schedule at an IdentoGO centre. Bring a current US passport, or a driver's licence with a birth certificate. The appointment itself takes about 20 minutes.
Then get on with the rest
Once your prints are in, the clock runs whether you sit still or not. Take your knowledge test, keep working, keep earning. TSA tells your state directly when you clear.
Worried about a record? The TSA assessment screens for specific disqualifying offences — some permanent, some time-limited, and many convictions aren't on the list at all. There's also a waiver and appeal process.

The Knowledge Test
30 questions, 80% to pass — 24 of 30. It covers hazardous materials regulations, placarding rules and thresholds, shipping papers, the segregation table, and emergency response.
The ELDT course is aligned with what's on it, so drivers who actually work through the material tend to pass first time. If you want practice against the real format, the hazmat practice test is 100 questions including a full 30-question exam simulation — or bundled with ELDT for $30, which saves $5.

Going for Your X Endorsement Too?
If you're hauling fuel or chemicals you need tanker as well as hazmat — together they show as the X endorsement. And there's a timing advantage most people miss.
Tanker requires no ELDT and no background check. The federal rule covers Class A, Class B, the B-to-A upgrade, and Hazmat, Passenger and School Bus only. Tanker is a 20-question knowledge test and nothing more — so you can go and get it
while your hazmat TSA check is still processing. One endorsement in hand instead of none.

How Long Until Renewal?
Hazmat endorsements last five years in most states — Florida renews every four. Renewal means a new TSA background check, and that takes the same 30 to 60 days it did the first time.
You do not repeat ELDT. The training requirement is a one-time thing for first-time applicants.
Start renewal 60 to 90 days before expiry. If the endorsement lapses while TSA is processing, you can't legally haul hazmat until it clears — and that gap costs real money. Whether you retake the knowledge test at renewal varies by state, so confirm with your licensing agency.

The Mistake That Costs People Two Months
Most drivers wait until a job offer requires hazmat before starting. By then they're already 6 to 10 weeks behind, with an employer waiting.
The second mistake is treating every step as sequential. You do not need TSA approval to complete ELDT. You do not need TSA approval to sit the knowledge test in most states. And you do not need to finish ELDT before applying to TSA — only before testing.
The whole thing comes down to one habit: the day you finish ELDT, book your fingerprinting. Everything else fits inside that 30–60 day window. Do it last and you've added two months to a process that didn't need them.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does the hazmat endorsement process take?
Six to ten weeks start to finish. Almost all of it is the TSA Security Threat Assessment at 30 to 60 days. ELDT is under 2 hours and reaches the FMCSA registry within 24 hours.
Do I have to wait for TSA clearance before taking the knowledge test?
In most states, no. Once your ELDT shows in the registry you can sit the test while TSA is still processing — they run independently, and that overlap is what cuts weeks off. A few states sequence it differently, so confirm with your
state licensing agency.
Can I start the TSA check before finishing ELDT?
Yes. ELDT must be done before your knowledge test, not before your TSA application. Starting TSA the same day you finish ELDT is the single biggest time-saver in the whole process.
How long does hazmat ELDT take?
Under 2 hours with DLA Academy — fully online, self-paced, most drivers finish in one session. Submitted to the registry within 24 hours, or the same business day with the $15 same-day upgrade.
What is the TSA fee?
$85.25, effective January 1, 2025. A valid TWIC card may qualify you for roughly $41. Paid to TSA, not to a training provider.
Do I need ELDT if I already have a CDL?
Yes, if you're adding hazmat for the first time. The February 7, 2022 exemption applies to licence classes you already hold, not to new endorsements — a driver with a ten-year-old Class A still needs hazmat ELDT.
Full requirements →
Do I need ELDT for tanker?
No. Tanker and Doubles/Triples are knowledge-test only — no course, nothing reported to the registry. Which means you can get tanker while your hazmat TSA check is still running.
Tanker practice test →
How long is a hazmat endorsement good for?
Five years in most states, four in Florida. Renewal needs a new TSA check but not a new ELDT course. Start 60 to 90 days early — TSA takes the same 30 to 60 days at renewal.
