How Much Does a Hazmat Endorsement Cost in 2026?
A hazmat (H) endorsement costs most drivers about $115 to $205 in total, split three ways: your hazmat ELDT training, the TSA Security Threat Assessment fee, and a state fee that varies widely. At DLA Academy your hazmat ELDT training is $20 — which keeps your all-in cost well below the $150–$275 most drivers pay elsewhere.
The full cost breakdown

1. Hazmat ELDT training — $20
If you’re getting your hazmat endorsement for the first time, FMCSA rules require you to complete Entry-Level Driver Training for hazmat before your state knowledge test. It has to be done through a provider listed on the federal Training Provider Registry, which is what makes the completion count.
Ours is $20 — online, self-paced, finished in under 2 hours. Most providers charge $50–$150 for the same training, which is what pushes typical totals to $150–$275. The curriculum is set by FMCSA and identical at every registered provider, so that gap is overhead, not content. Want test prep too? The hazmat ELDT + test prep bundle is $30.

2. The TSA background check — $86.50
Every hazmat applicant must pass a TSA Security Threat Assessment, which includes fingerprinting. The fee is $86.50 and the assessment is valid for five years. Fingerprinting is part of that fee — in most states there’s no separate charge.
Savings tip: if you hold a valid TWIC card and your state accepts comparability, you may qualify for a reduced rate of $41.00 — a saving of over $40. How the TSA check works →
3. Your state fee
After TSA clears you, you pay your state to add the H endorsement to your CDL. This is the part that varies most — roughly $10 to $100 or more depending on where you are, and whether your state charges separately for issuing the licence itself. Check your state →
The cost nobody budgets for
Through 2026 FMCSA removed thousands of providers from the Training Provider Registry — more than 110 on an emergency basis in a single day in August, after investigators went into 40 states. Under 49 CFR Part 380 Subpart G, any training conducted after a provider’s removal date is considered invalid.
Those drivers pay for the training twice. Which makes a $20 course from a listed provider worth more than a $150 course from one that isn’t — and makes checking the registry the first step, not the last. What to do if your provider was removed →
How long does it take?
The TSA background check takes about 4–8 weeks, and your state won’t issue the endorsement until it clears — so the full process usually runs 6–10 weeks. The single biggest time-saver: start your TSA application and fingerprinting the same day you finish ELDT, so the check runs in parallel with everything else.
In most states you enroll through IdentoGO. In eight states — FL, KY, MD, NY, PA, TX, VA and WI — the application and fingerprinting are handled through your state agency instead, which changes the order you do things in. Full timeline →
